Every conceivable variety I could find that fit in this bezel. No aftermarket switches, no blanking plates.

Is that a check engine... button? Or does it shock the motor into submission, as the icon suggests?

You guessed it - an early version of the automotive defibrillator, before they figured out how to get a stable idle speed.

mk2?

Bingo.
I went a little crazy one day when I worked in the parts department of a VW dealer and decided to see if I could fill every slot in that bezel with an operating switch.
This assembly might come in handy should I ever get another mk 2, but I first want to find a mk 1 like I had all those many years ago.

Or, considering that this is from the ‘80s and thus before debit cards, maybe it activated the dot-matrix printer attached to your TRS-80 or IBM PC XT to automagically fill out a check made out to your local VW dealer when your vehicle had an electrical problem, a not uncommon experience.
As the owner of multiple electrically-challenged VWs over the years I am allowed to make that joke.

I have an electrically challenged VW as well. It’s just that mine has a Porsche badge on it. (It’s my 924, it has a freaking Rabbit steering wheel, even)
This is a Rabbit wheel-
This is a Porsche 924 wheel -

Damn, seeing these kind of makes me miss my mk2 16V. Great fun to drive, except in its moody days where it was decided a stable idle and low end throttle response were optional.
Gotta love CIS.

In my mk2 most of these are blank. Of the pictured ones I only have the rear window heater. There’s a
rear
fog light button, but no front one as it doesn’t have front fog lights. The other four are blank. The hazard light button is on the steering column.

I have an Mk2 and I would be quite happy if it would have heated seats.

My jetta’s brake warning light did seem particularly alarmist.
